TOP DRAGSTER – Al Peavler made his best showing of the season by runner-upping in Top Dragster at the Division 3 Lucas Oil points race Sunday, Aug. 9 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

Peavler, a resident of Olney, Ill., started 2020 by going out in the first round of the D4 LODRS event at Tulsa but advanced to the second round during each of the two Topeka races in late July. His progress has positioned him No. 3 in D3 points with 184, not far behind Danny Nelson in first with 199 and Patrick Forster in second with 195.

Peavler would have pushed into the lead had he squeezed the tree a little bit more in the Indy final against Aaron Stanfield, who finished fourth in the 2019 national standings out of Division 4. Peavler had the ET advantage by turning a 6.133 at 231.20 on his 6.13 dial to the 6.153 at 223.34 on a 6.14 by Stanfield, but he was .004 on the tree to Peavler’s .026.

At least Peavler was consistent off the line, putting up two .025s when he faced opponents in rounds four and one. Oddly, he had two straight byes in rounds two and three.

Peavler qualified No. 6 at 6.149 at 209.01, and his son Blake was No. 16 at 6.270 at 189.71. They met in the first round, and Blake improved to a 6.115 at 228.04, but he had dialed a 6.14 and therefore broke out. So did his father, but by less at .005 on his 6.10 dial at 224.77.

To put him in his fourth final round, Peavler’s other win was over Phillip Oakley. He cut a .009 light but was .050 off his 6.20 dial at 216.90. Peavler’s .025 leave was saved by his .026 over 6.146 at 221.96 for just a .008 second margin of victory.

Twenty T/Ds qualified, led by David Nation of D5 at 6.104 at 224.36, followed by D3 racers Tom Elliott, Pascal Lecompte, J.B. Strassweg, and Mike Coughlin in the top five.

After eliminating Ashley Johnson in the first round, winner Stanfield put away Elliott and Strassweg in the next two rounds. Stanfield earned the semifinal bye.
